World Health Organization estimated in 2016 that approximately 52% of the world’s adult population was overweight or obese. Obesity is a huge health concern because it increases the risk of many diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers.

Weight management is known to be challenging, with limited effective nutritional solutions. Once an individual has become obese, most interventional programs focus on caloric restriction for weight loss. Caloric restriction for a quick weight loss is likely to be an ineffective way of dealing with overweight since people enjoy eating and severe caloric restriction is non-sustainable. In addition, severe caloric restriction is likely to lead to a reduction in muscle mass, instead of fat mass. Without careful management of diet composition, food restriction can lead to nutritional deficiencies and a decline in the body's function.

Prevention of weight gain should be emphasized as a strategy for long-term weight management success. The concept of eating healthy foods for healthy body weight needs to be installed at a very young age. Animal studies had shown that early overnutrition not only resulted in increased numbers of fat cells but also increased total body fat throughout adult life. Fewer fat cells and less fat gain in early developmental age can lead to a better chance of maintaining healthy body weight and body composition later in life.

Some healthy lifestyle type strategies, such as eating 70% full, are both useful for keeping a healthy body weight and increasing a person's lifespan. In essence, healthy body weight is a reflection of how a person is doing per healthy living and healthy aging. The nutrition strategies that benefit one health area would be likely to be beneficial for the other health areas as well.
