Pycnogenol® and Cognitive Health: Can It Help Support Memory, Focus, and Brain Function?

Cognition refers to the mental processes involved in learning, remembering, thinking, paying attention, and solving problems. As we age, these abilities naturally decline, making it more difficult to remain independent, productive, and mentally engaged. Changes in brain structure, nerve cell function, and brain chemistry all contribute to this gradual decline.
Researchers believe that oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and reduced blood vessel function play important roles in age-related cognitive decline. Oxidative stress occurs when the body produces more harmful free radicals than its antioxidant defenses can neutralize. With aging, free radical production increases while antioxidant protection and the body’s ability to repair damage decrease. Over time, this process can damage brain cells and promote the accumulation of amyloid-β plaques, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, increasing the risk of mild cognitive impairment and other neurodegenerative disorders.
Pycnogenol®, a standardized extract from the bark of the French maritime pine, is rich in antioxidant compounds that may help reduce oxidative stress and support healthy blood circulation. Growing clinical evidence suggests that these properties may also benefit cognitive function across different age groups and life situations.
Improved Attention, Memory, and Academic Performance in Young Adults
In an 8-week clinical study, 53 healthy university students (18–27 years) took 100 mg/day of Pycnogenol® while a comparable group served as controls. Students taking Pycnogenol® showed significant improvements in sustained attention, memory, executive function, and mood. These cognitive benefits also translated into better academic performance. The Pycnogenol® group had a lower exam failure rate (6.25% vs. 10.71%) and achieved higher average exam scores (26.1 vs. 23.8 points), representing a 7.6% improvement compared with the control group (1).
Enhanced Cognitive Performance in Working Professionals
Benefits were also observed in healthy professionals aged 33–55 years with elevated oxidative stress. After 12 weeks of 150 mg/day of Pycnogenol®, combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle program, participants experienced improvements in attention, sustained attention, memory, executive function, mental performance, and overall cognitive function. They also reported greater alertness, reduced anxiety, and improved contentedness. In addition, oxidative stress decreased by 30.4%, while virtually no change occurred in the control group. Participants receiving Pycnogenol® also performed better on a variety of professional work tasks, and the supplement was well tolerated with excellent compliance (>94%) (2).
Working Memory Support in Healthy Older Adults
In a 3-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 101 healthy adults aged 60–85 years received either 150 mg/day of Pycnogenol® or a placebo. Compared with the placebo group, those taking Pycnogenol® showed significant improvements in working memory and lower blood levels of F2-isoprostanes, a marker of oxidative stress. However, no significant improvements were observed in attention, episodic memory, or psychomotor performance. These findings suggest that Pycnogenol® may help preserve specific aspects of memory while reducing oxidative stress associated with aging (3).
Preserving Cognitive Function During Long-Haul Travel
Long-distance travel and jet lag can temporarily impair concentration, alertness, and mental performance. In a clinical registry study, 127 adults flying 10–12 hours eastbound took either 150 mg/day of Pycnogenol® or no supplement. Compared with controls, participants taking Pycnogenol® experienced less severe jet lag, shorter symptom duration, fewer nights of disturbed sleep, and reduced leg swelling after their flights. They also performed better on post-flight cognitive tasks, suggesting that Pycnogenol® may help preserve cognitive function and support recovery during long-haul travel (4).
Benefits for Mild Cognitive Impairment
Pycnogenol® may also benefit individuals experiencing early cognitive decline. In an 8-week registry study, 87 adults with mild cognitive impairment (Mini-Mental State Examination score of 18–23) received either 150 mg/day of Pycnogenol® plus standard care or standard care alone. Participants taking Pycnogenol® showed a significant improvement in cognitive function, with average MMSE scores increasing from 21.6 to 25.6, compared with only a modest increase from 22.4 to 23.0 in the control group. Overall, cognitive scores improved by a median of 18%, compared with 2.5% in the standard care group. The supplement was safe and well tolerated, suggesting potential benefits for individuals with early cognitive decline (5).
Summary
Current clinical evidence suggests that Pycnogenol® may support cognitive health through multiple mechanisms, including reducing oxidative stress, improving blood vessel function, and helping protect brain cells. Studies have reported benefits in attention, memory, executive function, mood, academic and work performance, recovery from jet lag, and working memory in older adults. It may also improve cognitive function in people with mild cognitive impairment.
Although many of these findings are encouraging, several studies were relatively small or observational in nature. Larger, long-term randomized clinical trials are still needed to confirm whether Pycnogenol® can help prevent age-related cognitive decline or reduce the risk of dementia. Nevertheless, current research suggests that Pycnogenol® is a promising natural ingredient for supporting brain health across different stages of life.
